Pigging Systems

Pigging is a process that enables product regaining after it has been transferred through pipes. The “pig” cleans the pipeline enabling maximum product recovery after each production cycle. The pigging process lets these, often undervalued, leftovers to be recycled and reused.

As an example:

DN 50: 2 litres per meter
DN 80: 5 litres per meter
DN 100: 8 litres per meter
DN 150: 18 litres per meter
DN 300: 80 litres per meter

Environment

After the pigging process the pipeline is free of the product:

This significantly reduces the usage of  cleaning solutions. Product dumping is nearly eliminated and the cost of re-processing very low. The pipeline requires less cleaning time in the CIP cycle which effects in higher efficiency.

  

Piping line optimization

The Piping line is often dedicated to only one product. Pigging system enables transferring different products through the same line without the concern of mixing the products.

Production stoppage reduction

Pigging systems are the prefect tool for SMED (Single Minute Exchange of Die) projects. The time of moving from current product to the next one is significantly reduced through shortening or even eliminating the CIP process.

Pigging system can be divided into three categories:

  • Manual System

The entire process is done by hand by a conscious operator.

After product transfer the operator, through a proper valve configuration, sends the pig to the arrival station. After the pigging is over the pig needs to be taken to the departure station.

  • Half-automatic System

In this case the operator role is limited to sending the pig from the departure station for it to clean the pipeline. After it finishes the arrival station sends the pig back automatically.

 

  • Automatic System

The operator’s role is limited to starting the production cycle, selecting the product type, selecting product’s amount and destination on the operating panel. The system, after measuring the set value, will automatically push out the product and prepare the installation for the next production.
